Luke 2: 34Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.” …..Thats pretty cool… it reminds me ofHebrews 4:12For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. 14Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven,f Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
He even told Mary herself…you will be pierced too.. like this is going to search you tooMatthew 10:32“Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.34“Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35For I have come to turn“ ‘a man against his father,a daughter against her mother,a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law—36a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’c37“Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.Jeremiah 17:5 “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the Lord. 6That person will be like a bush in the wastelands; they will not see prosperity when it comes. They will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives. 7“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. 8They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” 9The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?10“I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.”Romans 8:23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. 24For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? 25But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. 26In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.
i JUST LIKE HOW THE WORD (SWORD) searches our hearts and whether we stand determines our rise/fall
do we allow the piercing of that swords to dig down and search our hearts and divide soul from spirit?
Simeon is speaking of Christ (who is THE WORD (THE SWORD- the very words of his mouth)… ” This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too ”
David cried: “Psalms 139:23Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
Makes you think, you know? Am I allowing God to search my heart and deal with it? Do I pray Lord cut away that that is not of you… or do I seek after what I want-my own desire (even unconsciously) David was saying God search my heart and find what even I can’t see that’s a problem, show it to me, deal with it.
This is Psalms 139 in AMPLIFIED1 O Lord, you have searched me [thoroughly] and have known me.2 You know my downsitting and my uprising; You understand my thought afar off.3 You sift and search out my path and my lying down, and You are acquainted with all my ways.4 For there is not a word in my tongue [still unuttered], but, behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.5 You have beset me and shut me in—behind and before, and You have laid Your hand upon me.6 Your [infinite] knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high above me, I cannot reach it.7 Where could I go from Your Spirit? Or where could I flee from Your presence?8 If I ascend up into heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol (the place of the dead), behold, You are there.9 If I take the wings of the morning or dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,10 Even there shall Your hand lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me.11 If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me and the night shall be [the only] light about me,12 Even the darkness hides nothing from You, but the night shines as the day; the darkness and the light are both alike to You.13 For You did form my inward parts; You did knit me together in my mother’s womb.14 I will confess and praise You for You are fearful and wonderful and for the awful wonder of my birth! Wonderful are Your works, and that my inner self knows right well.15 My frame was not hidden from You when I was being formed in secret [and] intricately and curiously wrought [as if embroidered with various colors] in the depths of the earth [a region of darkness and mystery].16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance, and in Your book all the days [of my life] were written before ever they took shape, when as yet there was none of them.17 How precious and weighty also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them!18 If I could count them, they would be more in number than the sand. When I awoke, [could I count to the end] I would still be with You.19 If You would [only] slay the wicked, O God, and the men of blood depart from me—20 Who speak against You wickedly, Your enemies who take Your name in vain!21 Do I not hate them, O Lord, who hate You? And am I not grieved and do I not loathe those who rise up against You?22 I hate them with perfect hatred; they have become my enemies.23 Search me [thoroughly], O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts!24 And see if there is any wicked or hurtful way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. He knows our every move, our every word, he is greater than us, his understanding is above ours, he is there no matter where we try to go to get away or catch a break but Christ (his right hand) is right there and we are never alone but have God almighty in our midst assessing, we can hind nothing- he knows everything (our deepest secret) He knew us before we were born and he sees our unformed substance even now (this thing that he is making that is not perfect yet but is messy due to being in the process of being perfected).. He knows every day of our life including those that havent happened to us yet… so David Confesses: God you are greater than me, forgive me and he praises Him – god is to great and wonderful for david to comprehend or even begin to understand.. Then due to seeing the greatness and beauty of Him, he understand what the wicked are rejecting… “If they only knew!!! what they wwere giving up.” Then he quickly analyzes himself, “God do I hate them that hate you?” Its like he is saying, “God do I stand for something and not live with or like those that turn away from you, or do I act friendly with the world and get along perfectly with them like nothing is different between them and me?” Let us search our own hearts. “Do I get along fine with the world? Or do they dislike me because of what I stand for? Do i hate or love what they stand for? Do i make them feel guilty for how they live or do they feel plumb comfortable around me?” Then he cries, “SEARCH ME! FIND THAT IN ME GOD THAT IS UNLIKE YOU, THAT IS LIKE THEM AND DEAL WITH MY HEART! KNOW MY HEART AND FIND WHAT IS NOT ACCORDING TO YOUR WILL! LORD LOOK INTO EVERY THOUGHT I HAVE AND FIND WHAT IS NOT OF YOU! IF THERE IS ANYTHING GOD, KILL IT AND LEAD ME INTO THE WAY OF LIFE- LEAD ME TO YOUR SON JESUS CHRIST- MAKE ME LIKE HIM!”IT’S LIKE THAT OLD SONG:Change my heart oh God, Make it ever true.Change my heart oh God, May I be like You.You are the potter, I am the clay,Mold me and make me, This is what I pray. Here is David again crying out in Psalms 51
1Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.
2Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.
3For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.
4Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge.
5Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
6Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place.
7Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
8Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice.
9Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity.
10Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.
12Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
13Then (after he deals with your heart then…) I will teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you.
14Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, you who are God my Savior, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.
15Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise.
16You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
18May it please you to prosper Zion, to build up the walls of Jerusalem.
19Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous, in burnt offerings offered whole; then bulls will be offered on your altar.Ezekiel 18: 20The one who sins is the one who will die. The child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of the child. The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them.21“But if a wicked person turns away from all the sins they have committed and keeps all my decrees and does what is just and right, that person will surely live; they will not die. 22None of the offenses they have committed will be remembered against them. Because of the righteous things they have done, they will live. 23Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign Lord. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live?24“But if a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin and does the same detestable things the wicked person does, will they live? None of the righteous things that person has done will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness they are guilty of and because of the sins they have committed, they will die.25“Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear, you Israelites: Is my way unjust? Is it not your ways that are unjust? 26If a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin, they will die for it; because of the sin they have committed they will die.27But if a wicked person turns away from the wickedness they have committed and does what is just and right, they will save their life.28Because they consider all the offenses they have committed and turn away from them, that person will surely live; they will not die.29Yet the Israelites say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Are my ways unjust, people of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust?30“Therefore, you Israelites, I will judge each of you according to your own ways, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall. 31Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heartand a new spirit. Why will you die, people of Israel? 32For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent and live!
Here are some promises regarding this new heart:
Ezekiel 11:18“They will return to it and remove all its vile images and detestable idols. 19I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh. 20Then they will follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. They will be my people, and I will be their God. 21But as for those whose hearts are devoted to their vile images and detestable idols, I will bring down on their own heads what they have done, declares the Sovereign Lord.”
Ezekiel 36:25I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. 26I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. 27And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.
Excerpt from a website I read AFTER i read these others:
These verses are exhortations so that we do not yield to the things that would cause us harm or destroy us. Verse 23 goes to the very heart of the issue that will determine our destinies. This verse states that the issues (or the things that flow out of us), come from our hearts. We are all born with wicked things in our hearts, because we have inherited the sin nature from our fathers all the way back to Adam, when he sinned originally by his disobedience. All mankind carries the blight of sin, until we repent and come to Jesus for a heart cleansing.Matthew 15:8-11: “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. 9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. 10 And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: 11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.”Two things we are commanded to do:(1.) We are to guard our hearts and be cautious what we embrace and take into our spirit (Verse 23).(2.) We are to be careful about what comes out of our heart through our lips (Proverbs 23:7b: “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he…”).These two things will determine what kind of life we will have on this earth. Verse 24 tells us to put away a froward (crooked) tongue and quit saying perverse things. This is referring to all kinds of evil talk—cursing, gossiping, criticizing, lying, condemning, etc. When we speak these things, we are actually speaking a curse on someone. This comes not only on the person we say evil things about, but we will receive it back on our own lives, because we reap what we sow. That is why the Bible tells us the tongue is like a fire and unless we allow Jesus to help us to tame it, we will not be able to control what comes out of our mouths.James 3:6-10: “And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. 7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: 8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.”Our mouth problem is actually a heart problem, so to correct it we must ask the Lord to help us and ask Him to cleanse our hearts of the things that are not like Him. Notice in Proverbs 4:23-27 that not only is the heart mentioned, but the mouth, eyes, feet and hands as well. This means, to live a life of righteousness, we must make a total commitment to serve God with all of our heart and our minds and every part of our bodies as well. When we do this, we will walk in the blessing and wisdom of God.
